Comments and Observations from 2008 Interns

"My responsibilities range anywhere from making flyers for outreach to giving presentations about the campaign to planning events to encourage community members to be more informed about local politics. I am also in charge of the Youth Focus Group which is an attempt to get more youth involved in local politics. I lead meetings and plan events for the youth in the city."

"I realize more fully just how complex running a non-profit can be, and how much you need the same skills as people working in the "for profit" sector. I felt like I was working in a regular office, except I was working with people who loved their jobs and had a passion for preserving the environment."

-Marianne

"Because of this internship I've realized that non-profits must understand the population they are serving and that we cannot shy away from the contradictions that arise from the work that we do and the clients we serve. Interestingly I found that non-profits focused on homeless prevention are as important as those that sustain the homeless, or uplift the homeless."

  -Kathleen

"I was utilized for my capabilities because my supervisor...saw early on that I could write and henceforth gave me tasks that involved a lot of writing. So I wrote biographies about board members, I wrote over a half dozen marketing testimonials about clients' history and success in Salem Mission programs, and I was put in charge of a grant proposal seeking $10,000. I finished all of these projects and worked closely with my supervisor to edit each one."

-Peter

"My boss made sure to explain not only how the programs work but also the administrative and business aspect to a non-profit. I was able to not only work at The Open Door, but I also got to shadow her to meetings such as at Essex County Community Foundation and the Greater Boston Food Bank, meet board members, and understand how a non-profit is run successfully."

-Dale

"Part of my position was to research new methods of fundraising that could be incorporated into the program. As such they paid for me to go to a seminar specifically on non-profit and social networking. I feel that I have learned a great deal on the topic."

-David

"Perhaps more importantly, I was challenged everyday working in Lawrence, and learning about such a drastically different community in which, as an Andover resident, I had really never spent much time. I enjoyed getting to know various neighborhoods, learning about Lawrence's past and recent history, the Fresh Food Initiative in Essex County, and the politics of the city."

-Julia

"My internship was an incredibly valuable experience, and never felt like a mere summer job. Everyday was different, and there was always an on-going project in which to take part-I really felt I became an integral part of the organization, and became invested in their efforts throughout Lawrence."

-Tori

"It is easy to learn about a non-profit from an outside point of view, and be impressed by their work. However, it is an entirely different experience working inside the organization and becoming part of the whirlwind of activity that provides the services and improvements to a given community."

-Amanda

"I had no idea the work, the people, and the funding were so involved to make it all happen, so that was eye opening. I also found the dedication of the staff to be huge-and a great ingredient to the program's success."

-Christina

"Now that my internship is over I understand the difficulty that many non-profits face. There are not enough people who are truly passionate about their work and helping other people with human and social services."

-Kaeleigh

"I was given repeated opportunities to add my ideas and advice, to learn, observe, and create-and not simply work on tedious tasks."

-Maggie

"I certainly feel that I experienced a real internship. Not only was I trained to be a Certified Massachusetts Rape Counselor, but I learned so much about this field of public health, which was my ultimate goal. I really enjoyed working in the field of health and education services. I also learned quite a bit in regards to how small, non profit organizations work and function on a daily basis. This was a great experience for me as I plan on continuing to work for non-profits throughout my life."
